TCF's Crappy Animations - Five Nights at DarkDemon

Postby ThatCelticFurry » Sun Feb 15, 2015 6:20 pm

Hey, welcome to TCF's Crappy Animations. I'm ThatCelticFurry, the guy who makes the animations that go on this thread. There isn't much else to tell, so just look around and see if there's anything you might like.

Latest animation
Five Nights at DarkDemon

Someone had to do it.

Other animations
A Run that Isn't Crappy
Spoiler:

Credit goes to [Everybody Loves] Raymond for his run on which I based mine. At least the two hours this took gave me an excuse to download Glass2k after Oblivionfall recommended it to me four years ago.

Yet Another Crappy Run Loop
Spoiler:

I don't even know.

Another Crappy Run Loop
Spoiler:

Yet another run loop. This is probably the best one I ever made and it's still crap. Maybe this one will actually get me medium beginner.

By Default
Spoiler:
Image
Basically, this is an unfinished project in which a stickfigure goes to kill all of the default stickfigures. It's pretty bad, so you know ...
Also, I did use Krustalien's stick for this, even though I'm not using it properly. I just hope I don't get brutally murdered for using it without asking.

Disembodied 3
Spoiler:
Image
The third of a small series of animations I used to make back when I pretended to be some edgy teen that were basically nothing but a stickfigure being decapitated in some way. Disembodied 1 and 2 can be found here and here.

It's pretty short, and the frame rate seems to be too high for your spacing

Increase the spacing of the arrow, then lower the frame rate. I think you were trying to make the arrow more visible by having low spacing, but just add some kind of blur or trail effect.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I was afraid of. Maybe I should just have it at 18 or something instead of 33. Either that or try to be more careful with the spacing.

Alright, so I need better spacing, a lower frame rate and blurring.

Thanks for the advice. I'll see if I can remake this from a piece of garbage to a presentable piece of garbage. Only then can I achieve maximum low beginner level.

This looks much better, also make sure to let people know with a post when you update an anim or change it to make sure people see it.

What I recommend that you do is rotoscope a run loop that you like, and then use your copied version as reference whenever you animate a run loop until you can just do it on your own. You can do this with a lot of other stuff, too. It gives you a solid foundation on which you base your movements, and yet still be able to make them your own and develop independence.

Alright, this is quite a bit of neat advice here.

Anyways, it's been a long time since I've been relatively dedicated to Pivot animation and I need to know a few things before I can be 100% into it again.

A long time ago, a lot of the criticism I got was about moving every joint on the stickfigure. This is something I've been trying to do, but it just makes the figure look ... twitchy, to say the least. Now, is it necessary to move literally every joint in every frame?

Also, using the information on spacing I got from some ancient tutorials, do I really need to space so carefully that only a certain amount of pixels are moved, or can it just be close to that amount? How did it go anyway? 2-4-6-8-... or 1-2-3-4-...?

I think I said earlier that I fell out pretty badly over the years. If my memory's correct I made it to high beginner before I had that extremely long break from animating.

In most cases, yes. One of the few exceptions is a calm idle stance.

That's only a guideline. It should help you grasp the concepts of spacing, making neat-looking animation.
It has been proved (not by science, but whatever) that irregular spacing doesn't look good. But there's still a lot of "good" combinations.

Code: Select all
Constant pace :
O_O_O_O_O

Higher Constant pace :
O__O__O__O__O

Light easing :
O_O__O___O____O

Heavy easing :
O_O___O___________O______________________O

Periodic (2 frames) :
O____O_O____O_O____O_O____O_O
(stylish effect)

And after that, it is only matter of practise, of trying things.

What about running? I mean, I think my leg movements look decent but the stickfigure's upper body looks extremely awkward. What am I supposed to do about that when it comes to head, torso and arm movements?

I highly recommend you to download some .PIV-files of other animators that do know how to animate a run and see how they did it.

The Run Joint Tribute 2 just got released, so if you find some animators that animated a run to your liking, try downloading the .PIV-file if they shared it or ask them for it.
