Sprite Software

Postby neilhavkin » Wed Aug 13, 2014 8:10 pm

Hay thar,

I was just wondering what some solid sprite-creation softwares are. I'm thinking of making some sprites in Pivot and I need a good piece of software. I'd rather not use something that edits pixels individually, I'd like something with a "line" tool.

MS Paint is out of the question, the line tool on there pisses me the hell off. Adobe Illustrator looks nice. Worth it?

Thanks!

It looks great and I'll most definitely use it for my game design, however for Pivot I'm looking for something that isn't pixel-art. I've just got Adobe Illustrator CS6, so I'll get to know it a bit better and then use it for making my sprites.

If anyone has any experience using Illustrator for making sprites I'd really appreciate some input.

Illustrator is vector-based and won't do much for bitmap sprites. Graphics gale also supports image importing and pixel editing. An alternative is Photoshop, Paint.NET, or gimp,

I have Gimp but it doesn't work, tried reinstalling multiple times, still doesn't work.

I'll figure out a software.

You seem like you know image editing software. In Paint (which I would use) when you draw a line, these knobs pop up on the end of the line so you can adjust the lines after drawing them. This becomes annoying. Is there any way I can disable this?

As brutel said, i recommend Paint.net if gimp isn't working.

Graphics gale is made for doing mostly Pixel Art.

You're limiting yourself by using Paint. It does pixel-art well, and that's about it. Paint.NET and Photoshop are your best bets.

Paint.net is my homie, yo. But I'm not one for sprites in pivot if you're wanting to make a weapon or something, I'd prefer using the stick maker for those kinds of things.

I use MS paint, mostly because I need a newer computer to get paint.net. :(
GIMP is complicated though.

If you have access to Adobe software, just use Flash or Photoshop instead of Illustrator. I'm surprised nobody mentioned this.
