Help with Backgrounds

I'm alright at MAKING backgrounds with .stk files, but what I really have a problem with it ANIMATING while those backgrounds are there. I've just always found it tough to work without the onion skin. But I like animating in full color so much that avoiding the issue would do me no good. Does anyone have tips they could throw my way?

edit > options > set Onion Skins to 2-3.

I usually just set background opacity lower.
