In depth - rank the person above you

Postby H bomb » Sat Apr 19, 2014 1:42 am

Rather than just saying, beginner, inter, vet, or elite, I thought this could be a sweet idea, plus it would let the animators know specifically what they might need to work on in order to improve.

Basically you just look at the above users animations, and check to see what they are good at, what they are okay at, or what they aren't. Some of the categories are subjective because having a low rank on some may be a good thing. Like how realism can hold an advantage for having a low rank, since you may have a cartoony style! Etc.

These are the possible ranking categories:

Code: Select all
Flow:
Easing:
Spacing:
Realism:
Power:
Physics:
3D:
Effects:
Stick making:
Detail of animation:
Cinematics:

Overall Rank: beginner, inter, vet, or elite

To rank the person rank them out of ten next to the category. For example:
Flow: 3/10
Easing: 6/10
Spacing: 5/10
And so on. Thanks Tuna for the idea to change the ranking system from stars to numbers lol.

Thanks to jojishi for the formula too:
Formula:
There are 12 ranks in total, so:
100 (maximum score possible) / 12 = Each individual rank score
= 8.3
Score / r = rank placement
89 / 8.3 = 10.7

1 = Low Beginner
2 = Medium Beginner
3 = High Beginner
and so on..

Okay! Start ranking! I wanna see if this works :)

I think this is quite a good concept, but can't we just write 8/10 or 4/10 etc rather than a number of stars.

Please just write it out. Counting the stars is too tedious. ~Marvy

Flow: 7/10
Easing: 6/10
Spacing: Like, how much they space their movements? 8/10
Realism: 4/10
Power: 9/10
Physics: 7/10
3D: 3/10
Effects: 4/10
Stick making: 0/10
Detail of animation: 1/10
Cinematics: 4/10

Overall Rank: 7/10 or low intermediate? Thread's a little confusing, good idea though.

I think the reason this is slightly confusing is because it's not all about the stats and figures, it's also about the things that you can't put your finger on.

Flow: 8
Easing: 9
Spacing: 9
Realism: 5
Power: 5
Physics: 4
3D: 3
Effects: 8
Stick making: 10
Detail of animation: 9
Cinematics: 6/7

Overall Rank: 8/10 high inters.

Flow and easing: 5 Your movements are somewhat abrupt and you kinda lack some fluidity.
Spacing: 8 because the spacing you use makes things dynamic and entertaining to watch.
Realism: 4 becasue no one would move as fast as you make your characters move.
Power: solid 10. You're capable of adding great power to your animations.
Physics: 7. They're somewhat beleivable.
3D: If you're talking about 3D angles, then probably 8.
Effects: I'd say 6 becasue the particles you use are pretty simple and don't do the job of making an effect appealing to the eyes.
Stick making: Mostly 3. Most of your sticks aren't as detailed or maybe I haven't seen any detailed stick from you before.
Detail of animation: Judging from your rain animation, I'd give you an 8. They're good, but need some redefinition.
Cinematics: 9. As I said before, your animations are entertaining to watch and the scenes flow somewhat well.

Overall Rank: Intermediate. No more, no less because screw sub-ranks.

Flow: 7/10 Pretty damn good.
Easing: 6/10 You have it good most of the time, but sometimes it just seems a bit shaky, and you completely forget it at times, making stuff stiff.
Spacing: 7/10 Pretty well-regulated. Good jaahb.
Realism: 7/10 I've seen your newest fight thing and that looks really damn good. Nice choreography.
Power: 6/10 It's okay, but I've seen a punch or two that looked strong but hit like a good fart on a plastic bag.
Physics: 6/10 Also okay, but sometimes people look like they're gonna fall over and... don't?
3D: 7/10 You don't do anything really excessive with it but what you DO do with it adds to the fights nicely. Again, good jaahb.
Effects: 6/10 Blood's good, but some of your effects seem a bit out-of-place.
Stick making: 3/10 white dots, bases with only two back segments (the orange guy in your newest anim looks like his back's broken when he lands on the ground, I mean it bends over 90 degrees like ew), backgrounds aren't really detailed, I mean if you need any help with sticks I'm the guy (not with FX though lol) so just call on me if you ever need help with these kinds of things, but right now you're pretty basic.
Detail of animation: 6/10 The FX is a bit clunky or messy sometimes, the backgrounds aren't really good, but your movements are pretty great. S'good but not awesome.
Cinematics: 8/10 The camera follows the guys and isn't just going around in a circle (which is lazy and is like giving a camera to michael J fox), so it's damn better than most I've seen, and the angles can be pretty good. Maybe experiment with transitions?

Overall rank: low-med inter leaning more to med. Fix an easing thing here and there, learn some idling, better sticks a bit and you'll be smooth sailing from there.

Seems like I've rambled on a bit. Ah well, just read the bold parts if you're too lazy to read the notes :P
