Terraria is a game that allows you to do whatever you want to do on your own tempo. You can strive to achieve great things within the game by trying to beat the toughest bosses or whatever, but you can also choose to just build a house and farm some trees or whatever.
With achievements it takes the feeling of full freedom away and it just gives you a checklist of stuff you need to do.
