Actually WWM 6 with 720/1080p plugin is pretty good for simple stuff. Unless you're trying to achieve amazing effects and cuts etc then it's pretty good.

I'll try, thank you guys.
What I want to do is add sound effects, so I must be able to insert the sound at the precise frame. I don't remember being able to do so on WMM, but I'll try the latest version and that plugin.

Not if you just read the rules and abide by them. It's all common sense really.

You can always use the zoom tool to reach the intended frame. Also, if you want to add sound effects here's what you can do:
After adding the initial sound effects (without music, obviously), you save the video then import that video you saved to add another layer of sounds... Keep repeating the process until you feel like you've added enough sounds then add the music and save the final video and there you have it.

There's really no decent free video editing systems out there. I've been using vegas for quite a few years, and honestly, everything else sucks. With the exception of Premier/After Effects, and I still prefer vegas.
You could always try WMM. But Vegas is the most flexible editing system out there. You'd have a nightmare adding sound effects in WMM. In vegas it's literally just drag and drop into the timeline.
